Landmark Citizenship Ceremony

Paetongtarn’s Commitment to Inclusion

On June 28, 2025, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra handed out Thai national ID cards to 21 representatives of minority ethnic groups at Maechanwittayakhom School in Chiang Rai’s Mae Chan district. This initiative, part of a broader government push to address statelessness, aims to integrate over 480,000 individuals into Thai society, granting them access to essential welfare services and rights.

Streamlined Application Process

Five-Day Citizenship Approval

A recent cabinet resolution has slashed the citizenship application process to just five days, a significant improvement over previous years-long delays. The policy targets individuals who arrived in Thailand before 1999 and their Thai-born children, streamlining their path to citizenship. This reform reflects Thailand’s commitment to resolving statelessness, particularly for ethnic communities long marginalized in border regions.

Chiang Rai Leads the Way

Highest Beneficiary Numbers

Chiang Rai Governor Charin Thongsuk announced that 95,391 ethnic residents in the province will receive citizenship starting June 30, 2025, the highest number nationwide. This milestone underscores Chiang Rai’s significant role in the initiative, addressing the needs of diverse groups like the Akha and others who have lived in Thailand for decades without formal recognition.

Voices of Gratitude

Ethnic Communities Celebrate

Fon Woi Je, an Akha representative who received her ID card, expressed heartfelt thanks to Paetongtarn, the cabinet, and the Ministry of Interior for their efforts. She pledged that ethnic groups would contribute to Thailand’s development, reflecting a shared commitment to national progress. The ceremony highlighted the emotional weight of gaining legal recognition for these communities.

Building on Past Promises

Srettha’s Legacy Continues

Paetongtarn praised former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin for initiating efforts to accelerate citizenship processes, noting that his vision will be realized by June 30. She expressed pride in meeting recipients and ensuring their equal status as Thai citizens. The policy’s continuity demonstrates the government’s dedication to inclusivity and social equity across administrations.

Broader Impact on Society

Strengthening National Unity

Granting citizenship to ethnic minorities not only provides access to education, healthcare, and employment but also fosters national unity by embracing diversity. With over 480,000 individuals set to benefit, the initiative could reshape Thailand’s social fabric, empowering stateless communities to fully participate in economic and civic life, aligning with broader goals of equality and development.
