Tourism Minister Optimistic About F1 Event

Quick Financial Returns Anticipated

Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Minister, Sorawong Thienthong, expressed strong confidence that hosting a Formula 1 race in Thailand would achieve financial break-even within its first year. Speaking on Friday after a tourism progress meeting at Government House, he highlighted the event’s potential to deliver both direct and indirect economic benefits, boosting Thailand’s global tourism profile.

High-Level Talks Advance F1 Plans

Prime Minister Engages with F1 Leadership

Following Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s discussions with Formula One Group CEO Stefano Domenicali at the Monaco Grand Prix, Thailand is moving forward with its bid to host an F1 race in 2028. Sorawong announced that a feasibility study and budget proposal are set to be presented to the cabinet, supported by ongoing talks with potential sponsors to ensure financial viability.

Economic Impact of Hosting Formula 1

High Costs Offset by Revenue Potential

Organizing a Formula 1 race involves significant costs, potentially ranging from $200 million to over $1 billion for infrastructure, with annual hosting fees up to $55 million. However, Sorawong emphasized that revenue from ticket sales, sponsorships, and broader economic impacts could make the event profitable, depending on the duration of the hosting contract.

Strategic Push for Bangkok Street Circuits

F1’s Interest in Urban Race Routes

Thailand’s negotiations to host F1, which paused previously but resumed under the Srettha Thavisin administration, are gaining momentum. Sorawong noted that Formula 1 is keen on street circuits, and Thailand is exploring four to five potential routes in Bangkok. The minister plans to visit Singapore to reaffirm Thailand’s commitment to securing the 2028 race.

Boosting Thailand’s Tourism Appeal

F1 as a Catalyst for Global Attention

Hosting a Formula 1 race is seen as a strategic move to elevate Thailand’s status as a premier tourism destination. Sorawong’s optimism reflects the government’s belief that the event will attract global visitors and investors, creating a ripple effect of economic growth and reinforcing Thailand’s reputation as a dynamic host for world-class events.
