Thai University Revokes Hun Sen’s Honorary Degree Amid Border Tensions

Unanimous Decision by Council

Condemning Actions Against Thais

On August 8, 2025, Ramkhamhaeng University’s council unanimously voted to strip former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen of an honorary doctorate in political science, originally awarded in 2001. The decision reflects growing tensions due to recent border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia. The university cited Hun Sen’s alleged support for aggressive actions against Thai civilians as a direct violation of the values of peace and fraternity that the degree was meant to honor, prompting a strong institutional response.

Violation of Shared Values

Breach of Sovereignty Alleged

The council highlighted that Hun Sen’s recent conduct, including his reported endorsement of forceful measures during the Thai-Cambodian border conflict, contradicts the principles celebrated in the original citation. These actions, seen as infringing on Thailand’s sovereignty, have fueled armed confrontations along the border. By revoking the degree, the university aims to address the inconsistency between Hun Sen’s actions and the ideals of regional harmony, ensuring its honorary awards align with ethical standards.

Protecting Institutional Integrity

Preventing Public Misconception

Allowing Hun Sen to retain the honorary degree risked misleading the public about the purpose of such accolades, the council stated. The decision to nullify the award underscores Ramkhamhaeng University’s commitment to upholding its academic and moral standards. This move serves as a public statement against actions that undermine peace, particularly in light of the sensitive bilateral relations strained by ongoing border disputes, emphasizing the need for accountability in international leadership.

Broader Implications for Diplomacy

Navigating Regional Relations

The revocation comes amid heightened scrutiny of Cambodia’s role in the border conflict, with Thailand advocating for diplomatic resolutions through forums like the General Border Committee. By taking this step, the university signals a broader call for responsible leadership in Southeast Asia, aligning with Thailand’s efforts to address regional tensions through international law. The decision may influence public and diplomatic perceptions, reinforcing the importance of mutual respect in Thai-Cambodian relations as both nations seek to stabilize the region.
