Thai Embassy in South Korea Lowers Flag in Mourning

The Thai embassy in South Korea has lowered its flag to half-mast to honor the victims of the recent Jeju Air crash. This tragic incident resulted in the loss of 179 lives, prompting a period of mourning and reflection for those affected.

Details of the Incident

The Jeju Air flight 7C2216 tragically crashed while landing at Muan International Airport on December 29, 2024. Among the deceased are two Thai nationals: Jongluk Doungmanee, 45, and Sirithon Chaue, 22. Sirithon was a student at Bangkok University, traveling to meet her mother in South Korea, while Jongluk was returning to her job there.

Family Grieves for Their Loved Ones

Impact on Families of Victims

Jongluk’s family in Udon Thani is deeply mourning her loss and wishes to bring her body home for traditional religious rites. Her father, Boonchuay Duangmanee, expressed his heartache, stating, “I can only accept it, make peace with it.” He had a sense of unease when he heard about the crash, as his daughter often traveled with Jeju Air.

Sirithon’s Journey and Aspirations

Sirithon was in her final year studying airline business management and had checked into the hotel with her fiancé just before the incident. Tragically, she became separated from him during the evacuation.

Investigation into the Crash

Possible Causes Under Review

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, with initial reports suggesting a bird strike may have contributed to the incident. However, experts have raised questions about this theory due to the severity of the crash and its sudden nature.

Details of the Flight Path

The Boeing 737-800 departed from Suvarnabhumi Airport at 2:29 AM and crashed before 9 AM local time. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the aircraft skidded off the runway after failing to deploy its landing gear properly.

Government Response and Compensation

Support for Victims’ Families

In response to this tragedy, Thai officials have announced plans to provide support for families affected by the crash. The government is expected to assist with funeral arrangements and other necessary measures to help those grieving their losses.

Ongoing Investigations and Safety Measures

As investigations continue, authorities are committed to determining the exact cause of this devastating event. The findings will likely lead to reviews of safety protocols within airlines operating in the region.

A Community in Mourning

The Jeju Air crash has left a profound impact on families and communities both in Thailand and South Korea. As investigations unfold and support is provided to those affected, the memory of the victims will be honored through collective mourning and remembrance.
