Widespread Branch Closures Announced

Prioritizing Safety Amid Violence

The Thai Bankers’ Association revealed on Thursday that 35 bank branches across seven provinces—Surin, Buriram, Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat—have been temporarily closed due to escalating violence along the Thai-Cambodian border. The decision prioritizes the safety of customers, staff, and local communities as the conflict disrupts daily life and threatens security in these regions.

Thai Bankers’ Association Responds

Emergency Measures Implemented

Payong Srivanich, chairman of the Thai Bankers’ Association, emphasized the organization’s commitment to monitoring the volatile situation closely. The association has enacted emergency response protocols to address the risks posed by the border clashes, which have already caused loss of life and property. This proactive approach underscores the banking sector’s focus on safeguarding its operations and personnel.

Affected Banks and Branches

Major Institutions Impacted

The closures affect several major banks, including Kasikornbank (five branches), Bangkok Bank (four branches), Krungthai Bank (14 branches), Siam Commercial Bank (four branches), Bank of Ayudhya (two branches), and Thai Credit Retail Bank (six branches). Banks have also been granted authority to adjust operating hours for other branches and ATMs in high-risk areas to ensure continued safety and service flexibility.

Digital Banking as an Alternative

Encouraging Online Transactions

To minimize disruption, the Thai Bankers’ Association urged customers to utilize digital banking platforms, such as mobile and internet banking, which remain fully operational. Customers are encouraged to stay informed about branch statuses and operating hours through their banks’ websites, social media, or call centers, ensuring seamless access to financial services despite the closures.

Economic and Social Impact

Supporting Affected Communities

The border conflict has significantly impacted local economies, with businesses and residents facing disruptions in trade and daily activities. The Thai Bankers’ Association expressed deep concern for the affected communities, offering condolences to those who have lost loved ones and pledging support for residents, soldiers, and officials navigating the crisis in the border provinces.

Call for Calm and Resilience

Banking Sector’s Solidarity

The association reiterated its solidarity with those affected, emphasizing the banking sector’s role in maintaining stability during the crisis. By closing branches and promoting digital alternatives, banks aim to protect their staff and customers while ensuring financial services remain accessible. The Thai Bankers’ Association called for calm and encouraged residents to follow safety guidelines as the situation unfolds.
