Manchester United’s hopes of securing European football next season were dashed after a 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, with Brennan Johnson’s strike proving decisive. However, the post-match scenes stole attention as United captain Harry Maguire and Spurs defender Cristian Romero engaged in a heated exchange while awaiting their medals.

The two defenders had been at odds throughout the match, with Maguire visibly frustrated by Romero’s antics. At one point, after the Argentine went down following a soft challenge from Rasmus Højlund, Maguire was heard shouting, “You’re the captain, come on!”—referring to Romero, who wore the armband in Heung-min Son’s absence.

The tension didn’t end with the final whistle. Romero initially approached Maguire to shake hands, but the United skipper refused the gesture. Moments later, as Romero embraced Diogo Dalot, Maguire intervened, pushing the Spurs defender away and appearing to admonish him. The altercation required intervention from backroom staff before the two were separated.

Interestingly, Maguire’s frustration seemed directed solely at Romero, as he later shared a warm hug with Tottenham’s James Maddison—his former Leicester City teammate and England colleague—during Spurs’ guard of honor.

The defeat marks a disappointing end to United’s season, ensuring they will miss out on European competition for the first time since 2014/15. Their campaign concludes this Sunday with a Premier League clash against Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
