Thailand’s National Soft Power Committee is trying to register Thailand’s Songkran Thingyan as an intellectual property. Chadatip Chutrakul, a member of the committee, said that this process is an attempt to show the Thingyan water sports festival as a cultural heritage of Thailand in the international community and to prevent the use of “Thingyan festival” in other countries.

“It is important to preserve and promote Thailand’s traditional culture and position Thailand as one of the world’s leading festival destinations,” emphasized Chadatip Chutrakul, a committee member at the Daily News Talk 2024 Forum on Monday.

In addition, she said, “By designating Songkran Thai Thingyan as Intellectual Property, we will protect Thailand’s unique culture and tradition, and we can also gain financial benefits from the popularity of this festival not only in the region but also globally.”

The Thai National Soft Power Strategy Committee was formed to systematically work on the process of strengthening Thailand’s soft power.
