In a tense Premier League matchup, Manchester City edged out Southampton 1-0, with Erling Haaland scoring the only goal in the fifth minute. Despite being bottom of the table, Southampton earned praise from Pep Guardiola, who called them “one of the best teams in the Premier League” for their ability to defend with possession.
City dominated the match with 58% possession and 22 shots compared to Southampton’s five, yet Southampton’s defensive tactics made it difficult for the league leaders to break through for a second goal. Haaland’s early strike proved decisive, but the Norwegian forward missed a couple of chances in the second half that could have sealed the victory.
Southampton, winless this season, have struggled to find form and remain at the bottom of the table with only one point from nine matches. Their sole point came from a draw against Ipswich, yet Guardiola believes Southampton’s performances deserve more. He commended their style of defending with the ball, noting how they complicate opponents’ pressing strategies.
“The way they play is very demanding. People think defending means parking the bus, but they defend with possession. They are really, really good,” Guardiola said after the match. He highlighted how Southampton’s ability to retain possession made it hard for City to create clear-cut chances.
Bernardo Silva echoed his manager’s sentiments, saying that Southampton’s performances throughout the season have deserved more points. “They press high, they try to build up with the ball. It makes it tough for us, but we’re happy to get the three points,” Silva added.
Despite Southampton’s effort, Haaland’s early goal stood as the match-winner. The Norwegian forward, described by Guardiola as “a guarantee” for goals, has now netted 11 times in nine Premier League games this season. Haaland’s physical presence in the box and his knack for finishing gave City the upper hand, though he missed a couple of chances to double his tally.
Guardiola also expressed frustration with how defenders often hold Haaland during crosses, calling for more penalties to be given in such situations. “Every cross is a penalty with Haaland; the way they pull and grab him should be punished,” said the City boss.
Despite the narrow scoreline, the win allowed Manchester City to maintain their position at the top of the Premier League table. Southampton, meanwhile, continue to search for their first league win of the season, with their next challenge being to turn promising performances into points.
