Thailand Intensifies Efforts to Expand Durian Exports

Government Launches Strategic Initiatives to Grow Durian Trade

The Thai government is ramping up efforts to expand durian exports, with a particular focus on the Chinese market, which currently accounts for the vast majority of Thailand’s durian shipments. The Commerce Ministry is actively negotiating with Chinese authorities to ease chemical contamination screening procedures and accelerate customs processes, aiming to ensure Thai durians reach consumers swiftly and maintain their reputation for quality.

Strengthening Thai Durian’s Presence in China

Ministry Seeks to Streamline Export Processes and Build Confidence

Minister Pichai Naripthaphan recently met with Chinese trade officials, presenting the popular monthong durian variety for tasting and receiving positive feedback on its flavor and quality. The ministry’s goal is to promote steady growth in durian imports to China by advocating for more efficient screening at border checkpoints, especially during peak export seasons. Discussions include deploying additional equipment and personnel to reduce delays and prevent spoilage, as well as encouraging Chinese authorities to implement random quality checks for reputable brokers rather than inspecting every shipment.

Digital Campaigns and Influencer Partnerships Target Chinese Consumers

Online Promotion Aims to Enhance Thai Durian’s Image

To further boost demand, the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) has launched a digital marketing campaign targeting Chinese consumers through social media and live-streaming platforms. By collaborating with online influencers, the campaign aims to highlight the superior taste and quality of Thai durians, distinguishing them from competitors and building greater consumer confidence in the Chinese market.

Quality Control and Chemical-Free Assurance

Thailand Implements Rigorous Inspection Protocols for Durian Exports

Ensuring the purity and safety of exported durians remains a top priority. The government has introduced comprehensive inspection measures in key production provinces like Chanthaburi to certify that durians are free from chemical contamination. Recent efforts have successfully addressed concerns about dye contamination, and ongoing collaboration with Chinese officials has led to a relaxation of inspection protocols following a period of uncontaminated shipments. These initiatives are designed to reinforce Thailand’s reputation for high-quality durians and support the continued growth of exports.

Expanding to New International Markets

Thai Durian Export Strategy Targets Global Growth

While China remains the primary destination, Thailand is actively exploring new markets for durian exports, including the United States, European Union, and India. The Commerce Ministry has set an ambitious export target of at least 950,000 tonnes in 2025, valued at over 10 billion baht. Diplomatic engagements, such as discussions during the Indian prime minister’s visit, are paving the way for broader market access and increased export volumes.

Record Durian Production Forecast for 2025

Increased Yields Support Export Expansion Plans

Thailand’s durian production is projected to rise significantly in 2025, with yields expected to reach approximately 1.68 million tonnes—a 30% increase from the previous year. This surge is attributed to expanded cultivation areas and the maturation of trees planted in recent years, particularly in regions like Chanthaburi, Rayong, and Trat. The increased supply is expected to stabilize local prices and support the government’s export ambitions.
