Surge of Cyber Aggression

Over 200 Million Attacks Reported

Since the Thai-Cambodian border conflict intensified on July 23, 2025, Nation Group, a leading Thai media conglomerate, has endured over 200 million cyberattacks in just three days. Targeting outlets like The Nation Thailand and Thai News, these attacks form part of a coordinated Cambodian information operation (IO), aiming to disrupt and discredit ethical journalism. The onslaught includes Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, with www.nationthailand.com recording 223 million hits in a single day.

Tactics of Disinformation

Flooding Platforms with Spam

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, alongside the Thai-Cambodian Border Conflict Command Centre, identified three main tactics in this IO campaign: mass creation of fake Cambodian accounts to spam Thai news pages, coordinated reporting to trigger Meta’s automated takedowns, and spreading false narratives through bot-amplified comments. These efforts involve content distortion and image manipulation to undermine the credibility of Thai media committed to accurate reporting.

Defensive Measures Implemented

Geo-Blocking to Curb Attacks

In response, Nation Group has introduced geo-blocking to restrict access from Cambodian IP addresses, aiming to mitigate the flood of malicious traffic. The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society are collaborating with Meta to address the abuse and prevent further disruptions. These measures reflect a proactive stance to protect the integrity of their platforms amid escalating cyber threats.

Commitment to Ethical Journalism

Upholding Truth and Transparency

Despite the relentless cyberattacks, Nation Group remains steadfast in its mission to deliver credible, human rights-focused reporting. The organization vows to continue its “Nation Way” of ethical journalism, undeterred by attempts to suppress its voice. As Thailand prepares for ceasefire talks in Malaysia on July 28, Nation Group’s resilience underscores its dedication to truth and peace in a volatile regional climate.
