Myanmar Grants Clemency to Thai Fishermen

Four Thai crew members detained by Myanmar authorities since November 2024 have been released and returned to Thailand. Their release followed a pardon issued by Myanmar’s government, marking the culmination of months of diplomatic negotiations.

Thai Delegation Welcomes Released Crew

A Thai delegation, led by Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Ras Chaleechan, traveled to Kawthaung province, Myanmar, to receive the fishermen. The delegation included officials from the Thailand-Myanmar Township Border Committee and other relevant agencies.

Families Reunite with Released Crew

Upon their arrival in Ranong Province on Saturday afternoon, the crew members were warmly welcomed by their families at Prachaphat Lighthouse Pier. Emotional scenes unfolded as relatives embraced the returning fishermen.

Health Checks and Immigration Procedures

The crew underwent standard immigration procedures and medical examinations conducted by the Ranong Provincial Public Health Office before reuniting with their loved ones.

Background of Detention

Arrest and Allegations

The fishermen were detained on November 30, 2024, after their boats allegedly entered disputed waters. A gun attack by Myanmar patrol boats resulted in one crew member jumping into the sea and dying.

Previous Prisoner Release

Earlier this year, on January 4, Myanmar authorities released 151 Thai prisoners. Upon returning to Thailand, these individuals underwent screening to identify victims of deception and those involved in illegal activities.

Diplomatic Efforts Lead to Release

Bilateral Relations Play Key Role

Myanmar’s decision to pardon the fishermen was attributed to strong bilateral relations and humanitarian considerations. Vice Minister Ras expressed gratitude to Myanmar officials for granting clemency.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra also thanked Myanmar for its decision, emphasizing the positive diplomatic ties between the two nations.
