Mikel Arteta didn’t hold back in his criticism of Arsenal after their disappointing 1-0 defeat to West Ham at the Emirates, calling his team’s performance “nowhere near the levels” required to challenge for the Premier League title.
The game was decided by a first-half strike from Jarrod Bowen, which handed the Gunners their third loss of the season, ending their 15-match unbeaten run. Arsenal’s struggles were compounded by a red card for Myles Lewis-Skelly in the 73rd minute, further dampening their hopes of cutting Liverpool’s lead at the top to five points.
Frustrated by his team’s lack of attacking threat, Arteta didn’t shy away from shouldering the blame. “I’m very disappointed, obviously very angry. We didn’t hit the levels required today, and I take full responsibility for that. So, yes, I’m very, very angry,” he admitted in his post-match interview.
Despite a makeshift attacking lineup—Mikel Merino, a midfielder, was deployed up front alongside Leandro Trossard and Ethan Nwaneri on the wings—Arteta refused to use the shortage of natural forwards as an excuse for the loss. Arsenal registered 20 shots, but only two of those were on target, leaving Arteta frustrated by his side’s lack of quality.
“I completely reject using that as an excuse,” Arteta responded when asked about the attacking issues. “This is about the standards of the players and the team. We were far below what we need to be at to challenge for the Premier League. We had been consistent before, yes, but football is about what you do today, and today was nowhere near good enough.”
The defeat leaves Arsenal’s title aspirations hanging by a thread, with the gap to leaders Liverpool now eight points, and only 12 games remaining. With Liverpool’s recent slip-ups against Everton and Aston Villa, Arsenal had an opportunity to close the gap but squandered it with this loss.
Arteta was quick to credit West Ham for their performance but emphasized his team’s inability to generate momentum. “You have to congratulate West Ham for their victory and how they played. But we didn’t get anything right on our side. They stopped us from building any sequence of play or creating threatening chances,” Arteta said.
Looking ahead, Arteta’s focus will shift to Arsenal’s midweek trip to high-flying Nottingham Forest, though he’ll be without Lewis-Skelly for that match. The teenager was shown a straight red card after a VAR review for a foul on Mohamed Kudus, who was through on goal. It was his second red card in his last four league games, although a previous sending-off was overturned after appeal.
Arsenal now face the challenge of bouncing back quickly as they continue their battle for the title with little room for error.
