Scenic Route Takes Shape
Boosting Tourism and Trade
The Naga Withi project, a 43.5-kilometer scenic road along the Mekong River in Thailand’s Northeast, is now 16% complete, with full construction expected to wrap up by 2027. Overseen by the Department of Rural Roads, the project connects the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge in Mukdahan to Phra That Phanom Temple in Nakhon Phanom. Montri Dechasakulsom, the department’s director-general, shared this update on August 6, 2025, highlighting its potential to enhance tourism and cross-border trade while uplifting local economies through job creation.
Infrastructure Upgrades Underway
Enhanced Roads and Bridges
The project involves upgrading rural roads, including Mor Hor 3003, Mor Hor 3015, and Nor Phor 3015, to a width of 6 meters with shoulders of 0–2 meters, reinforced with steel for durability. Eleven bridges are being expanded, and proper drainage systems are being installed in community areas to ensure safety and accessibility. With a budget of 615 million baht, the initiative also includes scenic rest stops, designed to offer travelers picturesque views of the Mekong and its cultural landmarks, fostering a unique travel experience.
Cultural Significance in Design
Embracing Isaan Traditions
The Naga Withi road incorporates cultural elements reflective of Northeast Thailand’s Isaan heritage, with signage using natural tones and imagery inspired by the naga, a mythical serpent symbolizing abundance and the Mekong River. The project celebrates regional traditions like the Bung Fai Phaya Nak (naga fireball) festival and full moon rituals, which resonate across Thailand and neighboring countries. These design choices aim to attract tourists by blending local identity with the road’s scenic appeal, enhancing its cultural and economic impact.
Key Landmarks Along the Route
Connecting Iconic Sites
Spanning from the Mukdahan governor’s residence to Phra That Phanom, the road passes notable landmarks such as the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, Manopirom Beach, Wat Song Khon, and Kaeng Kabao islet. These attractions are expected to draw visitors, boosting local businesses and strengthening rural road networks. By improving connectivity and highlighting the region’s natural and cultural beauty, the Naga Withi project positions Northeast Thailand as a vibrant destination for both domestic and international travelers by 2027.
