Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United suffered yet another setback in their dismal Premier League campaign, falling 1-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge—hardly the ideal preparation ahead of next week’s Europa League final.
The defeat leaves United languishing in 16th place, just two spots above the relegation zone, with only Tottenham—who also lost on Friday—separating them from further trouble.
Friday’s clash was far from a classic, with the game only sparking to life in a frantic five-minute spell after the hour mark. Chelsea thought they had taken the lead from the penalty spot, only for VAR to overturn Chris Kavanagh’s initial decision. Moments later, Marc Cucurella broke the deadlock with a powerful header, and Noni Madueke should have doubled the advantage but fired wide.
The solitary goal proved enough for Chelsea, who climbed into the top four at Manchester City’s expense—though Pep Guardiola’s side still have a game in hand.
For United, the loss adds to a season of frustration, with key players like Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, and goalkeeper André Onana cut dejected figures at full-time. With the Europa League final on the horizon, Amorim will be desperate to lift his squad’s morale after another deflating result.
The only faint consolation for the Red Devils is that Tottenham, their opponents in Bilbao, also head into the final on the back of a defeat. Spurs fell 2-0 to Aston Villa, with manager Ange Postecoglou revealing post-match that midfielder Pape Sarr was substituted as a precaution due to a back issue.
Postecoglou remained optimistic, stating: “Son [Heung-min] is ready and available. Up until their goal, the boys worked hard and stayed disciplined. We had our moments, but after conceding, we lost some belief.”
With both finalists arriving off losses, the Europa League showdown promises to be a battle of resilience—but for Amorim and United, the pressure is mounting to salvage something from a disastrous season.
