Manchester United are reportedly closing in on an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha, marking a significant step in their summer rebuild under manager Ruben Amorim. After a disappointing debut season in the Premier League, the Red Devils are preparing for an active transfer window, with Cunha emerging as a priority target.
The Brazilian attacker has been in stellar form this campaign, netting 16 goals in 31 appearances for Wolves, despite their struggles. Although he signed a new contract earlier this year, United are prepared to trigger his £62.5 million release clause to secure his services. However, they could face stiff competition, with Newcastle United also monitoring the 25-year-old.
Cunha is believed to be enticed by the prospect of playing a key role in Amorim’s revamped squad at Old Trafford. The Portuguese coach has already hinted at his admiration for the former Atlético Madrid man, having been seen in discussions with him earlier in the season and again after Sunday’s match between the two sides.
Amorim previously praised Cunha ahead of their encounter, stating, “He is a real quality player, one of those who can make a difference.” The United boss has emphasized the need for strategic recruitment this summer, saying, “We must identify the right profiles to fit our system—players who perfectly suit their roles. Financial backing helps, but smart signings are crucial.”
In addition to Cunha, United are also targeting Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, who has a £30 million release clause. The former Manchester City academy product has attracted interest from Chelsea as well, setting up a potential transfer battle.
Meanwhile, speculation suggests that Marcus Rashford could be involved in a surprise swap deal, with Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins reportedly on United’s radar. Both clubs remain in contention for Champions League qualification, though United’s hopes hinge on winning the Europa League.
