Man Utd and Chelsea Receive Major Boost in Pursuit of £30m Striker Liam Delap

Manchester United and Chelsea have been handed a significant advantage in their pursuit of Liam Delap after Ipswich Town’s relegation from the Premier League activated the striker’s £30 million release clause.

The 22-year-old forward has been a rare bright spot in Ipswich’s difficult campaign, scoring 12 league goals despite the team’s struggles. His impressive performances in his debut top-flight season have attracted interest from several clubs, with United and Chelsea now poised to make their move.

Ipswich’s fate was sealed following a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle, confirming their immediate return to the Championship. While manager Kieran McKenna has expressed hope of retaining Delap, the club will have little say if a Premier League rival triggers his release clause.

United and Chelsea Eyeing Striker Reinforcements

Manchester United are reportedly planning a double striker signing this summer, with Wolves’ Matheus Cunha a key target in a potential £62.5 million deal. However, manager Ruben Amorim is keen to add another forward, with Delap and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen also on the radar.

Chelsea, meanwhile, continue their search for a reliable No. 9, and Delap’s combination of youth, potential, and proven Premier League ability makes him an appealing option.

McKenna Admits Delap’s Future Is Uncertain

Despite Ipswich’s desire to keep him, McKenna acknowledged that Delap has the talent to thrive at an elite club.

“I don’t think anything is decided yet,” McKenna said before the Newcastle match. “Liam has been fully focused on finishing the season strongly, and there’s certainly a chance he could stay. But can he play for the biggest clubs in the world? Absolutely. He’s already shown his quality in a team fighting for survival.”

“He’s still young, still learning, but his potential is enormous. The right decision will be made in the summer—whether that’s for Liam or for Ipswich. But he’s happy here, developing well, and I believe he’ll achieve great things in his career.”

With the transfer window opening on June 1, Delap’s future could be resolved quickly, and United and Chelsea appear ready to battle for his signature.
