K9 Team Concludes Search Operation in Chatuchak District
Urban Search and Rescue Team Ends Mission After 11 Days
The K9 unit of Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Thailand officially concluded its search operation at the collapsed State Audit Office building in Chatuchak District on Monday. The decision was made due to escalating safety concerns for both the rescue dogs and their handlers. The collapse followed a recent earthquake in Myanmar, leaving the site increasingly hazardous.
Safety Concerns Prompt Mission Termination
The K9 team emphasized the importance of preventing injuries to their personnel and dogs. “We had to call off the operation to prevent potential injuries,” the team stated. Despite the challenges, no injuries were reported during the mission, which lasted 11 days, exceeding its original seven-day schedule.
Collaborative Efforts in Disaster Response
USAR Thailand’s Expertise in Urban Rescue Operations
USAR Thailand is a specialized team that responds to complex urban disasters. It includes experts from various agencies, ensuring coordinated emergency responses. Sutthikiart Sophanik, Director of K9 USAR Thailand, confirmed that the team received strong public support, including donations of funds and supplies that enabled them to extend their mission.
Public Support Boosts Extended Rescue Efforts
The extended mission showcased the collaborative spirit between rescue teams and local communities. Donations played a crucial role in sustaining operations beyond initial plans.
Challenges at Collapsed Site
Heavy Machinery and Tactical Adjustments
Rescue operations faced significant challenges due to heavy concrete debris and steel reinforcements at the site. Machinery was deployed to expand entry points after canine units detected possible human remains but were withdrawn temporarily for safety reasons.
Detection by K9 Units Sparks Tactical Shifts
Sahara, a trained rescue dog, signaled a possible human presence beneath debris in Zones A and D. This prompted manual inspections and adjustments to search strategies. However, no verbal responses were received during inspections.
Ongoing Search Efforts Amid Complex Conditions
Authorities Continue Search for Missing Persons
With 79 individuals still unaccounted for and 15 confirmed fatalities, authorities remain committed to clearing debris and locating victims. Coordination among Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, machinery operators, and canine teams is ongoing under real-time guidance from field commanders.
Future Preparedness for Disaster Response
While the operation has ended, USAR Thailand reaffirmed its readiness for future missions. The team’s expertise and dedication underscore its critical role in disaster management across Thailand.
