HEADING OUT TO PHUKET’S ISLANDS IN THE WET SEASON

We’re now entering the so-called ‘wet season’ (aka. low season) in Phuket, but there’s still plenty of great opportunities to head offshore. In fact, some would say that this is the BEST time of the year to visit Phuket and its 30+ islands.

Generally, it’s believed that December until April is the best time to visit Phuket. Of course you will be blessed with mostly blue skies and turquoise waters at this time.

The only change at other times of the year is that there may be more clouds around, the occasional downpour (usually lasting less than 30 minutes) and some south-westerly winds. Many people enjoy the slightly cooler weather, the flush of a quick downpour

You will also see the best sunsets in Phuket during the low season, filtered through clouds on the horizon. Really, dramatically better!

But tour operators operate from Phuket right through the year. Although some more exposed islands are closed down at this time, there are still many islands and beautiful beaches to visit and explore during the ‘down time’.

And you’ll likely get much better prices for flights, accommodation and your tour. Operators usually need a bit more flexibility with days and timing of your trip, but have the experience to dodge the storms and find the best places where an excellent trip is still the final result.

Once you’ve explored Phuket’s 32 unique beaches there’s another 30 or so islands to check out, many within an hour’s boat trip of the main island.

Apart from some of the better know island hops – Phi Phi islands, Hong Islands, Koh Racha group and James Bond Island – there are many, many special beaches and lagoons that are less visited but no less spectacular during this time. For beginners there’s even Coral Island that’s only 15 minutes from Phuket – open right through the wet season.

The popular Koh Phi Phi Don, Raya Island and James Bond Island remain open right throughout the wet season. Your tour operator will also give you the full list of where they recommend during this time.

Usually during August and September, the height of the west season, the Similan Islands, as well as Maya Bay, are given a rest from tourists. But there’s still SO much to enjoy at this time – Phuket’s best tour operators are very experienced in watching the wet season weather and finding locations that are still safe and enjoyable to visit
