Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott has revealed how learning from Anfield leaders like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk has helped him thrive in a leadership role for England’s U21s.
The 22-year-old midfielder starred in England’s 2-1 victory over the Netherlands, scoring both goals to secure a place in the U21 European Championship final. Elliott, one of only two players to win the tournament under Lee Carsley in 2023, has been instrumental in the Young Lions’ success this summer.
Leadership Lessons from Liverpool’s Stars
Reflecting on his growth as a leader, Elliott said:
“Coming from Liverpool, there are so many leaders in that team. I’ve taken lessons from how they construct the team, how they react in tough moments, and how they lift the group. Whether I’m playing or on the bench, I try to stay positive and keep the team going.”
Elliott highlighted the influence of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, two of Liverpool’s most influential figures, in shaping his mentality:
“Look at Salah—he’s scored so many crucial goals for us. Then there’s Van Dijk, who stepped up with a last-minute winner. That’s leadership—not just talking, but delivering when it matters. I’ve tried to bring that into this England squad.”
Proving His Big-Game Mentality
With four goals in the tournament, Elliott is the second-highest scorer behind Germany’s Nick Woltemade. His performances have silenced critics who questioned his ability to deliver in decisive moments.
“I’ve been in these high-pressure situations before—with Liverpool and England. When your back’s against the wall, it’s about digging deep and fighting to the end. Scoring twice to win the semi-final was amazing, but now we focus on the final.”
England U21s Face Germany in Euro Final
England will meet Germany in the U21 Euro final after their 3-0 win over France. Elliott and his teammates are now aiming to secure back-to-back European titles.
“We can’t get carried away—it’s about recovery, staying focused, and giving everything to lift the trophy.”
