Toll-Free Travel for Songkran Celebrations

M6 Motorway Opens for Free Usage

Motorists traveling during the Songkran holidays will benefit from toll-free access to the Saraburi-Nakhon Ratchasima motorway (M6). The Department of Highways has announced that an 85-kilometer section of the motorway will be open without charge from April 11–17, easing congestion and facilitating smoother travel during Thailand’s traditional New Year celebrations.

Key Dates for Toll-Free Access

Outbound and Inbound Toll Waivers

  • April 11–13: The outbound lane heading to Pak Chong, Nakhon Ratchasima, will be toll-free.
  • April 14–17: The inbound lane heading to Nong Khae, Saraburi, will also be toll-free.

This initiative is expected to significantly reduce traffic on Highway No. 2 (Mittraphap Road), cutting travel time by 2–3 hours.

Travel Guidelines and Restrictions

Rules for Motorway Usage

Only four-wheel vehicles are permitted on this section of the M6 motorway, with a speed limit of 80 km/h enforced. Motorists are advised not to park or stop on the motorway except in emergencies, as violators may face fines of up to 2,000 baht.

Limited Facilities Along the Route

Drivers should plan carefully as this section lacks essential amenities such as petrol stations, EV charging stations, food vendors, and car service centers. However, one restroom stop at kilometer 147 is available and operates 24/7.

Benefits of Toll Waivers

Economic and Traffic Impact

The toll-free initiative is expected to reduce traffic congestion by up to 45% while saving significant travel time for motorists. Despite a projected revenue loss of 183.68 million baht, the government anticipates economic benefits totaling approximately 274.51 million baht due to faster travel times and reduced congestion.

Future Plans for M6 Motorway

Full Operations by 2026

The Bang Pa-in–Nakhon Ratchasima M6 Motorway Project is nearing completion, with full operations and toll collection set to begin in 2026. A public trial for the entire route is planned later in 2025.

For further details or assistance during travel, motorists can contact the Highway Department hotline at 1586.
