44 Migrants Found Abandoned

In Kanchanaburi’s Thong Pha Phum district, authorities arrested 44 Myanmar nationals early Thursday after their driver fled a police chase. The migrants, hoping for jobs in Malaysia, were left stranded when the suspect abandoned the vehicle, highlighting ongoing illegal migration challenges.

Suspicious Truck Sparks Pursuit

Driver Evades Checkpoint Stop

At around 3:30am, a patrol of police, soldiers, and local officials spotted a suspicious pickup truck on Highway 323. When signaled to stop, the driver accelerated, leading officers on a chase to Radar Hill, where the suspect ditched the vehicle and escaped into dense forest terrain.

Migrants Crammed in Truck Bed

No Documents Found on Group

Inspecting the abandoned pickup, officers discovered 44 men, women, and children hidden under a tarpaulin. None spoke Thai or possessed entry documents, revealing their status as illegal migrants smuggled into Thailand, as confirmed by Chakhrit Tanpirun, Thong Pha Phum district chief.

Smuggling Route Uncovered

Cross-Border Journey Detailed

Through an interpreter, the migrants revealed they entered Thailand via natural crossings near Three Pagodas Pass in Sangkhla Buri. Originating from towns like Payathongzu and Mawlamyine, they were transported by vehicle and boat in stages to evade detection.

High Costs Paid to Brokers

75,000 Baht for Promised Jobs

The migrants disclosed paying brokers in Myanmar 75,000 baht each for promised employment in Malaysia. This significant fee underscores the lucrative nature of human smuggling operations, exploiting vulnerable individuals seeking better economic opportunities abroad.

Legal Action Initiated

Charges for Illegal Entry Filed

All 44 migrants were taken to Thong Pha Phum police station, where they face charges for illegal entry. Authorities are intensifying efforts to dismantle smuggling networks, with ongoing investigations to identify and prosecute those orchestrating these illicit operations.

Vehicle Owner Under Scrutiny

Fake Plates Prompt Further Probe

Police discovered the truck’s Kanchanaburi license plates were counterfeit, leading to the identification of the vehicle’s registered owner. The owner will be questioned, facing potential legal consequences if found complicit in the smuggling of the Myanmar migrants.
