Unveiling the Legacy of Prince Damrong Rajanubhab

Nestled on Lan Luang Road in Bangkok, Thailand, the Varadis Palace Museum stands as a testament to Thai history and architecture. This former residence of Prince Tisavarakumarn, better known as Prince Damrong Rajanubhab, was constructed in 1911 by German architect Karl Döhring during the reigns of King Rama V and King Rama VI.

In 1977, the palace underwent a significant transformation, evolving from a private residence into a public museum and library. This renovation was a pivotal moment in preserving Thai cultural heritage, with Princess Galyani Vadhana, the elder sister of Thailand’s King Bhumibol, presiding over the opening ceremony on September 12, 1977.

In 1984, the Association of Siamese Architects awarded the palace the title of outstanding conservation building, cementing its status as a crucial piece of Thailand’s architectural heritage.
