David Raya Responds to ‘Celebration Police’ Ahead of Arsenal’s Crucial Clash Against Liverpool
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has made it clear that the Gunners are ready to face Liverpool with full passion, despite criticism over their celebrations in previous matches. Last season, Arsenal faced backlash for their post-match celebrations after a 3-1 win over Liverpool, with pundits like Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville labeling the emotional display as “immature.” However, Raya insists the team won’t hold back if they secure another victory.
Raya said ahead of the much-anticipated match at the Emirates: “Every win in the Premier League is important, and we should celebrate every win the same. Last season, beating Liverpool was massive for us, and if we win on Sunday, expect the same emotions and celebrations.”
Liverpool, now under new management after Jurgen Klopp’s surprise departure, pose a significant challenge for Arsenal. Under new boss Arne Slot, Liverpool have raised their level, and Raya acknowledges the threat they pose: “They’ve improved, and they’re going to come for three points. We have to be ready.”
Arsenal’s celebrations from their win in February sparked uproar when Martin Odegaard borrowed a photographer’s camera in the aftermath, which enraged former players and pundits. But despite the criticism, Raya and his teammates remain focused on securing victories and showing their joy on the pitch.
This time around, Arsenal are facing more than just a formidable Liverpool side. Injuries to key players such as Bukayo Saka, William Saliba, and Martin Odegaard, along with Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori’s fitness concerns, have left Mikel Arteta’s squad stretched thin. With Saliba suspended and Odegaard potentially sidelined, Arsenal’s lineup will need to adapt quickly.
Raya remains optimistic despite the setbacks, saying: “Everyone knows how important Saliba is, but we have top players who can step in. We’re ready to fight and win this game.”
Arsenal also need to address their discipline issues, having received three red cards in their last eight Premier League games, most recently in a 2-0 loss to Bournemouth. Raya stressed the importance of learning from these mistakes: “We’re not trying to get red cards, but they’ve changed the game for us. We need to move forward and focus on getting results.”
The Gunners currently sit four points behind Liverpool in the Premier League standings. With a busy schedule ahead, including away matches against Preston, Newcastle, Inter Milan, and Chelsea, Arsenal must capitalize on their home advantage against Liverpool.
As Arsenal look to improve on last season’s second-place finish, Raya emphasizes the need to treat every game as a must-win: “There are so many strong teams in the league now. If we want to win trophies, we have to win every game, not just against the big teams like Liverpool or Manchester City.”
Sunday’s match against Liverpool is not only a chance for Arsenal to narrow the gap at the top of the table but also to silence the critics of their celebrations once again.
