Hun Sen Highlights Trade Imbalance

Former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has warned that Thailand’s decision to restrict border movement will significantly harm its export-driven economy. Speaking on Saturday, he emphasized that Thailand, a major exporter to Cambodia, stands to lose more due to the closure of key checkpoints, escalating tensions in an ongoing border dispute.

Trade Figures Underscore Thailand’s Risk

2024 Data Shows Export Dominance

Hun Sen cited 2024 trade statistics, noting Thailand exported over $5.2 billion in goods to Cambodia while importing only $1.1 billion. This imbalance suggests that Thailand’s economy, heavily reliant on cross-border trade, will face significant disruptions from the restricted border access.

Thai Military Tightens Border Control

Aranyaprathet Checkpoint Affected

On Saturday, the Thai army implemented early border closures at several locations, including the critical Aranyaprathet checkpoint in Sa Kaeo province. This action, aimed at pressuring Cambodia amid a dispute sparked by a May 28 gunfire exchange near Chong Bok, has heightened bilateral tensions.

Hun Sen Rejects Boycott Calls

Urging Composure Over Retaliation

Responding to Cambodian businessman Duong Chhay’s call for a boycott of Thai goods, Hun Sen, now senate president, firmly opposed such measures. He advocated for “composure, maturity, patience, and politeness,” urging Cambodians to avoid actions that could escalate the conflict or harm national dignity.

Cambodia Absolves Responsibility for Shortages

Blame Placed on Thailand’s Closure

Hun Sen stressed that any shortages of Thai products in Cambodia result directly from Thailand’s border restrictions, not the Cambodian government’s actions. He called on citizens to remain calm, emphasizing that the Royal Government of Cambodia should not be held accountable for the economic fallout.

Call for Diplomatic Restraint

The former leader’s remarks reflect a push for measured responses amid the Thai-Cambodian border conflict. By discouraging retaliatory boycotts and promoting diplomatic firmness, Hun Sen aims to maintain Cambodia’s dignity while addressing the economic and political challenges posed by Thailand’s actions.
