Quick Thinking Saves Tourist During Sudden Storm in Phuket
A heroic parasailing assistant made a life-saving decision to leap into the sea off Kata Beach, Phuket, to rescue a tourist after a parasailing boat capsized during a sudden storm on October 16.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. when strong winds and rough waves overturned the boat in Karon district. At that moment, the tourist and the parasailing assistant, who was controlling the parachute, were still airborne.

Displaying remarkable bravery, the assistant unbuckled his safety harness mid-air and jumped into the sea, reducing the parachute’s weight and allowing the tourist to glide safely back to shore.

Rescue Efforts and Medical Response
The parachute landed near the beach, where rescue workers quickly arrived to provide immediate assistance. According to Channel 7, the tourist complained of chest tightness, while the assistant sustained a minor facial injury. Both were promptly taken to Chalong Hospital for examination and medical care.

Fortunately, no serious injuries or fatalities occurred. The assistant’s swift actions and courage under pressure have earned widespread praise from Thai netizens, who hailed him as a hero for preventing a potential tragedy.

“His quick decision saved the tourist’s life — an act of true professionalism and bravery,” one user commented online.

History of Parasailing Incidents in Phuket
While parasailing remains a popular beach activity in Phuket, the incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved when weather conditions change abruptly.

Earlier this year, in January, a parasailing assistant tragically lost his life off Karon Beach after falling from a height equivalent to a 15-storey building while attempting to protect a tourist. Despite his efforts, he was unable to regain balance mid-flight. The tourist survived unharmed.

In February last year, a Chinese tourist suffered a broken leg in another parasailing accident off Karon Beach. She accused the operator of reckless practices and prioritizing profits over safety. The operator later compensated her 400,000 baht, citing a sudden change in wind direction as the cause.

Authorities Urge Caution During Unstable Weather
Phuket officials have since reminded beach operators and tourists to closely monitor weather forecasts before engaging in parasailing or other water sports, especially during the monsoon season.

Safety experts recommend:

  • Checking wind and wave conditions before flight.

  • Ensuring all equipment is properly secured and inspected.

  • Following lifeguard and operator instructions at all times.
