Opening a Vital Artery

Enhancing Connectivity Today

On June 29, 2025, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) opened a new 2-kilometer road linking Vibhavadi Rangsit Road and Phahon Yothin Road, aimed at reducing congestion and improving access to Don Mueang International Airport. This infrastructure milestone, completed ahead of schedule, promises smoother travel for commuters and travelers in northern Bangkok, addressing long-standing traffic bottlenecks in the region.

Official Inspection and Approval

Deputy Governor’s Oversight

Deputy Bangkok Governor Wisanu Subsompon inspected the project on June 26, joined by senior BMA officials. He highlighted the road’s role in boosting east-west connectivity, particularly for those traveling from Ram Intra and Thepharak roads to Don Mueang. The route allows drivers to bypass traffic signals on Phahon Yothin Road, enhancing flow and cutting travel time significantly.

Strategic Infrastructure Upgrade

Part of Broader Plan

The new road is one of 15 major BMA infrastructure projects expedited to tackle delayed construction. Managed by the BMA’s Public Works Department, it alleviates pressure on congested routes like Vibhavadi Rangsit, Ram Intra, and Sukhaphiban 5. By creating a direct corridor from Soi Vibhavadi Rangsit 72 to Thepharak Road, it streamlines movement across northern Bangkok.

Two-Phase Construction

Bridge and Road Completion

The project was executed in two phases: the first, from Vibhavadi Rangsit Road to a new bridge over Khlong Lat Phrao, was completed on June 11, 2025. The second, extending from the bridge to Thepharak Road, wrapped up on May 27. This efficient timeline reflects the BMA’s commitment to delivering critical infrastructure to improve urban mobility and support economic growth.

cyclist-Friendly Features

Promoting Sustainable Travel

The road includes dedicated cycle lanes, catering to Bangkok’s growing cycling community, which has expanded by 15% since 2023, per local estimates. These lanes encourage eco-friendly transport and enhance safety for cyclists navigating busy routes. The design aligns with the BMA’s vision for sustainable urban development, balancing vehicular and non-motorized travel needs.

Seamless Transport Integration

Linking Major Networks

The new road integrates with key expressways, including the Uttaraphimuk Elevated Tollway, Chalong Rat Expressway, and Motorway No. 9, as well as the BTS Green Line and SRT Red Line. This connectivity enhances access to Don Mueang Airport, which served 28 million passengers in 2024, and supports Bangkok’s role as a regional transport hub, fostering economic and tourism growth.
