Bangkok to Experience Coldest Weather in Nearly 40 Years

As temperatures are expected to drop significantly, Bangkok is preparing for its coolest weather in almost four decades this Sunday and Monday, with lows predicted to reach 16 degrees Celsius. This unprecedented cold snap is part of a broader weather pattern affecting the entire region, including the northern and northeastern provinces, where temperatures could plummet to 12°C.

Expert Insights on the Upcoming Cold Snap

Seree Supharathit, director of the Centre for Climate Change and Disaster at Rangsit University, has advised residents to prepare themselves physically and mentally for the upcoming chill on January 12 and 13. He noted that this cold wave is accompanied by strong winds, making it essential for people to dress warmly and stay alert during this period.

Regional Temperature Forecasts

In addition to Bangkok’s expected lows, 13 provinces in the North—including Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Lampang—and six provinces in the Northeast, such as Loei and Udon Thani, are forecasted to experience similar drops in temperature. The average lows in Bangkok and surrounding areas are typically around 21°C, but this weekend’s forecast marks a significant deviation from the norm.

Implications of Global Warming

While this cold weather may be a welcome change for some, Mr. Seree cautioned that such cool temperatures may become increasingly rare due to ongoing global warming trends. He also highlighted that the cool season often brings harmful dust pollution from various sources, urging residents to take precautions against potential health risks.

Weather Conditions Ahead

The Meteorological Department has indicated that temperatures will decrease by 5 to 7°C in the North and Northeast, while Bangkok will see a drop of 2 to 5°C between January 10 and 13. A strong high-pressure system extending from China will contribute to these cooler conditions, alongside increased fire risks due to dry and windy weather.

Coastal Warnings and Rain Forecasts

In addition to the cold snap, the northeast monsoon is expected to strengthen over the Gulf of Thailand and the southern regions, leading to increased rainfall and isolated heavy showers in lower southern areas. Waves in the Gulf are forecasted to reach heights of 2 to 4 meters, with warnings issued for small boats to remain ashore during thundershowers.

Preparing for Unusual Weather Patterns

As Bangkok braces for this historic cold wave, residents are encouraged to prepare for cooler temperatures while remaining cautious about potential health impacts from dust pollution. This unusual weather event serves as a reminder of the changing climate patterns affecting Thailand and underscores the importance of being prepared for extreme weather conditions.
