Arsenal are nearing the acquisition of Sporting CP’s prolific striker Viktor Gyökeres, having already finalized personal terms with the Swedish forward. The Gunners are now in advanced negotiations with Sporting over a transfer fee, aiming to secure the 27-year-old for less than his £68 million release clause.
Gyökeres, who netted an impressive 54 goals last season, has expressed his eagerness for a new challenge, with Arsenal emerging as his preferred destination. Despite interest from Manchester United and other Premier League clubs, the striker is determined to join Mikel Arteta’s project at the Emirates.
Double Boost for Arsenal’s Attack and Midfield
The potential arrival of Gyökeres follows Arsenal’s confirmation of Martín Zubimendi’s signing from Real Sociedad in a deal worth over £50 million. The Spanish midfielder, who rejected Liverpool last summer, has committed to a five-year contract, providing Arteta with a much-needed midfield reinforcement following the departures of Jorginho and Thomas Partey.
Zubimendi, a key target for Arteta, brings elite technical ability and tactical intelligence to Arsenal’s midfield. His signing is seen as a crucial step in bridging the gap to Manchester City after three consecutive second-place finishes in the Premier League.
“Once I decided to leave, Arsenal was my top choice,” Zubimendi told the club’s official website. “Their style suits me perfectly, and this is a young, ambitious squad with huge potential.”
Gyökeres Deal Nearing Completion
Gyökeres, who joined Sporting from Coventry City in 2023, has reportedly agreed to a five-year deal with Arsenal. The transfer could also see Brighton benefit from a sell-on clause inserted in his previous move.
Arsenal had also shown strong interest in RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško, but Gyökeres has emerged as the primary target to bolster their attacking options. Sporting director Edu Gaspar and recruitment chief Andrea Berta are working swiftly to finalize the deal ahead of pre-season.
Further Reinforcements on the Way?
In addition to Zubimendi and Gyökeres, Arsenal are also closing in on Brentford’s Christian Nørgaard in a deal worth up to £15 million. The Gunners have also held talks with Chelsea’s Noni Madueke, though a formal bid is yet to be submitted.
Arteta praised Zubimendi’s arrival, stating:
“Martín is a top-quality player who will add intelligence and composure to our midfield. He’s exactly what we need to compete at the highest level.”
With these signings, Arsenal are making a strong statement of intent ahead of the 2024-25 season. Fans can expect more updates as the club continues to strengthen its squad.
