The ambitious Andaman Riviera project is on track to revolutionize Thailand’s Andaman coast with a 50 billion baht (US$1.5 billion) plan to create over 600 kilometers of new roads, enhancing connectivity and promoting economic growth. The project’s final report is scheduled for completion in February, after which construction is expected to begin in the coming years.

Andaman Riviera: Transforming Coastal Infrastructure

A Game-Changing 50 Billion Baht Investment

The Andaman Riviera project, announced by the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OPT), aims to construct a vast road network across six provinces along Thailand’s Andaman coast, including Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun. With a budget of 50 billion baht, the project seeks to connect existing roads, improve travel routes through scenic areas, and enhance the region’s tourism appeal.

Timeline and Public Participation

According to Chaiwat Sangkhaphak, the Division Director for Transport and Traffic System Development, construction could start in three to four years after the final report is submitted and approved by the Cabinet. Public hearings, like the one held on October 21, are integral to gathering local input, ensuring the project considers residents’ opinions and environmental concerns.

Economic and Tourism Benefits of the Andaman Riviera

Boosting Regional Investment and Tourism

The Andaman Riviera is expected to have far-reaching effects on the region’s tourism and logistics sectors. With a focus on improving travel routes and increasing accessibility, the project will make the Andaman coast a more attractive destination for both domestic and international visitors. This, in turn, is likely to encourage more investment and economic development in the provinces along the coastline.

Phuket’s Economic Potential

The project is particularly significant for Phuket, one of Thailand’s premier tourism hubs. Watcharaphong Chiso, Director of the Phuket Provincial Office Strategies and Information for Development Division, highlighted the province’s substantial economic contribution, generating 380 billion baht from tourism last year, second only to Bangkok. However, Phuket has historically received a small share of the tourism development budget, with just 169 million baht allocated last year. The Andaman Riviera could help bridge this gap by enhancing logistical connectivity and boosting tourism revenue in the region.

Environmental and Logistical Considerations

Managing Environmental Impact

While the project is set to bring economic benefits, environmental assessments will be a key component of its planning, especially in areas near national parks and coastal reserves. Certain sections of the road network may require additional environmental impact studies to protect these sensitive areas, ensuring the region’s natural beauty remains intact.

Enhanced Logistical Connectivity

The Andaman Riviera project also seeks to enhance logistical connectivity, with demand for cargo and passenger transport in the region expected to grow over the next two decades. By connecting major roads and creating a more cohesive network, the project will support both local businesses and international trade, fostering economic growth across Thailand’s Andaman coast.

The Road Ahead for the Andaman Riviera

A Bright Future for Thailand’s Andaman Coast

With its final report expected in February, the Andaman Riviera project is poised to pave the way for a new era of economic growth and tourism development along Thailand’s stunning Andaman coast. By improving transportation infrastructure and enhancing accessibility, the project aims to turn this region into a hub for both visitors and investors, ensuring a brighter future for the provinces involved.
