Thai Meteorological Department Sounds the Alarm

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a weather warning as shifting atmospheric conditions bring intense storms, cooler temperatures, and rough seas across the country. From the northern mountains to the southern coasts, Thailand is experiencing diverse weather patterns that demand caution and preparedness.

Monsoon Intensifies Over the Gulf of Thailand

Thunderstorms and Rising Waves

The northeast monsoon over the Gulf of Thailand and the southern region is intensifying, leading to heavy thunderstorms and waves exceeding 2 metres in certain areas. Mariners are advised to avoid venturing into storm-prone waters as strong winds continue to batter the coastline.

Impact on the Southern Region

  • East Coast: Thunderstorms will cover 40% of the area, with key provinces like Chumphon, Songkhla, and Narathiwat expected to face the heaviest impact.
  • West Coast: Thunderstorms will affect 30% of the area, particularly in Phang Nga, Phuket, and Krabi.

Sea conditions remain hazardous, with waves between 1 and 2 metres, surging beyond 2 metres during thunderstorms.

Cooler Temperatures Sweep the North and Northeast

Residents in the northern and northeastern regions are experiencing a temperature drop of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius due to a cold air mass from China.

Northern Region

  • Morning Chill: Temperatures range from 18–24°C, dropping to 7–14°C in mountainous areas.
  • Highs: Afternoon highs reach 31–34°C.
  • Wind Speeds: Northeast winds blow at 10–20 km/h.

Northeastern Region

  • Cool Mornings: Lows range from 18–22°C, with highs of 32–34°C.
  • Mountain Cold: Peak areas experience lows between 13–18°C.
  • Windy Conditions: Winds reach 10–30 km/h, intensifying the chill.

Weather Changes in the Central and Eastern Regions

Central Region

The central plains are seeing slightly cooler mornings, with temperatures dipping to 22–24°C and highs peaking at 34°C. Strong winds are expected, blowing at 10–25 km/h.

Eastern Region

Partly cloudy skies and mild temperature drops mark the eastern region. Lows hover between 23–25°C, with highs around 33–34°C. The sea is relatively calm but can see waves up to 2 metres during thunderstorms.

Bangkok and Surrounding Areas

In Bangkok, partly cloudy skies and strong winds dominate the forecast.

  • Temperatures: Lows of 24–26°C and highs of 33–34°C.
  • Winds: Northeast winds at 10–25 km/h.

Tropical Storm Man-Yi Adds to the Uncertainty

Adding to Thailand’s turbulent weather is Tropical Storm Man-Yi, currently in the upper South China Sea. The storm is expected to weaken as it moves toward Hainan Island, China, but its remnants may influence regional weather conditions.

Key Safety Precautions

  1. For Mariners: Avoid sailing in areas with thunderstorms or high waves.
  2. For Residents: Prepare for colder mornings in the north and northeast.
  3. Travelers: Check weather updates before visiting regions prone to storms or rough seas.

As Thailand navigates these unpredictable weather conditions, the TMD’s warnings serve as a crucial reminder to remain vigilant. From rough seas in the south to chilly winds in the north, it’s essential for residents and travelers alike to stay informed and prioritize safety.
