Firm Stance on Sovereignty

Defending Key Border Sites

On August 6, 2025, Lieutenant General Boonsin Padklang, commander of Thailand’s 2nd Army Region, declared that Thai troops will remain stationed at 11 critical border sites, including Chong Aan Mah in Ubon Ratchathani and Phu Makua in Si Sa Ket, regardless of the outcome of Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee talks in Kuala Lumpur. Emphasizing Thailand’s sovereignty, he confirmed the deployment of barbed wire and troops to prevent Cambodian incursions, reinforcing the army’s commitment to protecting Thai territory.

Diplomatic Efforts Intensify

Eight-Point Plan Proposed

Thai and Cambodian officials, meeting in Malaysia since August 4, finalized an eight-point proposal for defense ministers to review on August 7, observed by representatives from China, the United States, and Malaysia as the Asean chair. Led by Acting Defence Minister General Nattaphon Narkphanit, the plan includes a mutual ceasefire, civilian protection, and a freeze on troop movements. The National Security Council’s consensus on the proposal aims to ensure a sustainable ceasefire, with further discussions on compensation and territorial claims slated for the Joint Border Commission.

Ceasefire Compliance Questioned

Cambodia’s Sincerity Under Scrutiny

General Nattaphon highlighted Cambodia’s apparent commitment to the ceasefire, as shown in preliminary agreements, but stressed that the ministerial meeting would test their sincerity. Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri, spokesman for the Ad Hoc Centre on the Thailand-Cambodia Border Situation, reported a calm border with no recent clashes, despite a prior Cambodian attempt to breach Thai barbed wire at Chong Aan Mah. The restoration of barriers and absence of troop buildups signal cautious optimism, though increased Cambodian drone activity remains a concern.

Drone Ban and Diplomatic Outreach

Ensuring Operational Safety

A nationwide ban on civilian drone flights, extended until August 15, aims to prevent interference with military operations, though agricultural drones may see relaxed restrictions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to brief Thai ambassadors virtually on August 7 to align diplomatic messaging. These measures underscore Thailand’s focus on maintaining stability and transparency, as the army holds its positions while pursuing peaceful resolutions through bilateral talks, countering Cambodia’s claims of Thai aggression.
