Devastating Accident at College Project

Basket Plummets 26 Meters

A catastrophic incident unfolded on Saturday morning at a construction site in Phatthalung province, where a crane basket carrying two painters detached and fell 26 meters. The accident, which occurred at a college building under construction in Moo 1, Khuan Maprao sub-district, Muang district, resulted in one worker’s tragic loss and left another with severe injuries. The incident has raised urgent questions about safety protocols at construction sites, drawing attention to the risks faced by workers in elevated tasks.

Emergency Response at the Scene

Rescue Teams Rush to Aid Victims

Rescue workers and medical staff from Piyaruk Hospital arrived swiftly at the site to assist the two painters involved in the collapse. Thawatchai Rattanapong, 36, was found entangled in the steel railings of the fallen basket, with a broken right leg, and did not survive the impact. Nearby, Chutidet Thongnak, 43, sustained critical injuries, including two broken legs and a severely damaged left arm. He was immediately rushed to Phatthalung Hospital for emergency treatment, highlighting the rapid response to mitigate further harm.

Eyewitness Account of the Collapse

Weight Overload Suspected

Praphan Detchsuk, a 50-year-old tiler working nearby, witnessed the harrowing event and provided critical details to authorities. He reported that the crane operator had welded a steel frame to lift the metal basket to the fifth floor for painting tasks. However, the combined weight of the two workers and the basket exceeded the frame’s load-bearing capacity, causing the attachment to fail. This account points to a potential oversight in equipment safety, underscoring the need for rigorous inspections on construction sites.

Police Launch Investigation

Seeking Accountability for the Incident

Muang Phatthalung police, led by Pol Lt Col Jamlong Kongsawat, are investigating the precise cause of the crane basket failure. Authorities plan to question those involved, including the crane operator and site supervisors, to determine if negligence or equipment issues contributed to the tragedy. The investigation aims to establish whether legal action is warranted, ensuring accountability for any lapses in safety standards that may have led to the catastrophic collapse.

Construction Safety Under Scrutiny

Calls for Stricter Oversight

The Phatthalung incident has reignited concerns about worker safety in Thailand’s construction industry, particularly for high-risk tasks involving heavy machinery. The use of a welded steel frame to support the basket raises questions about adherence to safety regulations and load capacity assessments. Industry experts are calling for stricter oversight and regular equipment checks to prevent similar accidents, emphasizing that worker safety must be prioritized to avoid future tragedies.

Community and Industry Response

Supporting Recovery and Reform

The accident has left the local community in shock, with many expressing solidarity with the affected workers and their families. Construction firms are now under pressure to review safety protocols, especially for tasks involving elevated platforms and cranes. As Chutidet Thongnak continues treatment, the focus shifts to ensuring his recovery and implementing measures to enhance site safety. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust safety standards to protect workers in hazardous environments.
