Surging Foreign Film Investments
Record Revenue in 2025
Thailand’s film industry is poised to generate 10 billion baht in revenue from foreign productions in 2025, according to Deputy Government Spokesperson Sasikan Watthanachan. From January to June, 279 international film projects contributed 2.8 billion baht to the economy, surpassing expectations and prompting officials to revise the annual target from 7.5 billion baht. This growth highlights Thailand’s rising status as a global filming hub, driven by strategic incentives and diverse locations.
Boosting Tourism and Economy
Impact of International Productions
The influx of 279 foreign film projects in the first half of 2025 has significantly bolstered Thailand’s tourism and creative sectors. High-profile productions, such as Jurassic World: Rebirth and Alien: Earth, have showcased iconic locations like Bangkok’s Thong Lor and the natural beauty of Krabi and Phang Nga. These projects not only generate direct revenue but also attract tourists to filming sites, amplifying Thailand’s appeal as a cultural and scenic destination.
Top Filming Destinations
Popular Locations Shine
Bangkok, Pathum Thani, and Chon Buri emerged as the most sought-after filming locations, with India, South Korea, Japan, and China leading as the top countries producing projects in Thailand. The Thailand Film Office (TFO) reported that these officially permitted shoots have created thousands of local jobs, from production crews to hospitality services, strengthening the economy across 47 provinces and reinforcing Thailand’s reputation as a versatile filming backdrop.
Generous Incentive Programs
30% Cash Rebate Drives Growth
A key factor in Thailand’s success is the government’s 30% cash rebate program, which incentivizes foreign filmmakers by refunding up to 150 million baht per project for significant local spending. This initiative, coupled with no investment cap, has attracted blockbuster productions like The White Lotus Season 3, which invested 1.2 billion baht. The government is considering extending this rebate to sustain Thailand’s competitive edge in the global film industry.
Showcasing Thailand’s Beauty
Alien: Earth Highlights Diversity
The upcoming Disney+ series Alien: Earth, set to premiere on August 13, 2025, features Thailand’s diverse landscapes, from urban Bangkok to the coastal allure of Surat Thani. The production utilized large sets at The Studio Park in Samut Prakan, showcasing Thailand’s ability to support complex, high-budget projects. Such visibility on global platforms enhances Thailand’s soft power, drawing international attention to its cultural and natural assets.
Global Promotion Efforts
Film Festivals Elevate Profile
Thailand is actively promoting its film industry through participation in prestigious events like the Cannes Film Market and Berlin International Film Festival. These efforts aim to position Thailand as a premier filming destination, fostering collaborations with international studios. With 2024’s foreign film revenue reaching 6.6 billion baht from 491 productions, the 2025 target of 10 billion baht reflects confidence in Thailand’s growing influence in global cinema.
