Phuket Security Operations

Patong Beach Device Dismantled

On June 26, 2025, Phuket’s bomb squads swiftly responded to a suspicious object found 200 meters from Dolphin Park on Patong Beach. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams used a high-pressure water cannon to disable the device, ensuring no risk to tourists or residents. The operation, conducted at 11 AM, cordoned off the bustling beach area, reflecting heightened security measures to protect Thailand’s $50 billion tourism industry, a key economic driver.

Promthep Cape Discovery

Hidden Device Safely Destroyed

Later that day, EOD teams located another suspicious object embedded in concrete near Promthep Cape’s sunset viewing area in Phuket’s Rawai subdistrict. The device, designed to produce noise rather than cause harm, was safely neutralized. Phuket’s police chief, Pol Maj Gen Sinlert Sukhum, confirmed the devices aimed to incite panic, not destruction, aligning with Thailand’s ongoing efforts to secure its 35 million annual visitors.

Krabi’s Timely Response

Sculpture Park Bomb Defused

In Krabi, a timed explosive device was discovered at 11:30 AM on June 26 near the Mahad wood sculpture installation on Uttarakit Road, just 30 meters from a police booth. EOD officers defused the device, which resembled those found in Phuket, suggesting a coordinated effort. Krabi’s proximity to Phuket, both drawing 10 million tourists yearly, underscores the urgency of maintaining safety in these popular destinations.

Suspect Confessions Drive Action

Arrests Uncover Wider Plot

The operations followed the June 24 arrest of two suspects, aged 27 and 29, in Phangnga’s Muang district, where police seized explosives from their vehicle. During interrogations in Yala, the suspects admitted to planting four devices across Phuket, including one in a motorcycle near Phuket International Airport and two at Patong Beach. Authorities suspect two accomplices remain at large, prompting intensified searches across southern Thailand.

Public Safety Reassured

Governor Addresses Concerns

Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat emphasized that the devices posed no significant threat, designed to create fear rather than harm. Enhanced screening protocols for all entering Phuket and Krabi, including at ferries and airports, aim to restore confidence. With tourism contributing 12% to Thailand’s GDP, the governor urged residents and visitors to report suspicious activities, reinforcing public cooperation as vital for safety.

Ongoing Investigations Continue

Krabi Mosque Motorcycle Probed

A suspicious motorcycle found abandoned near Krabi’s central mosque on June 26 is under investigation, with authorities cautious after similar incidents. Forensic teams are analyzing the neutralized devices, which share timing mechanisms, to trace their origins. As Thailand faces rising security concerns, with 245 injuries from southern insurgent attacks in 2025 per Deep South Watch, officials remain vigilant to protect tourists and locals alike.
