Hun Sen Praises Troop Adjustments

Thailand and Cambodia have successfully averted a large-scale border clash by pulling troops back from the disputed Chong Bok area, according to former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, now senate president. On Sunday, June 9, 2025, he described the military repositioning as a strategic adjustment to ease tensions, a move highlighted by the Khmer Times, fostering hope for stability along the Ubon Ratchathani frontier.

Troops Return to 2024 Positions

Trenches Filled to Reduce Tension

Both nations’ forces retreated to their 2024 positions in the Nam Yuen district on Sunday evening, with Cambodian troops agreeing to fill in trenches dug in the contested zone. This decision followed morning negotiations in Chong Bok, led by Cambodia’s Lt Gen Srey Duek of the 3rd Support Division, marking a significant step toward de-escalating the long-standing border dispute in 2025.

Successful Bilateral Talks

Military Leaders Forge Agreement

The talks saw Cambodia’s Lt Gen Srey Duek and Thailand’s Maj Gen Somphob Pharawet of the Suranaree Task Force reach a mutual understanding, as confirmed by army spokesman Maj Gen Winthai Suwaree. Lt Gen Nutt Sriin, deputy chief of Thailand’s 2nd Region Army, attended and described the discussions as direct “man-to-man” dialogue, reinforcing the collaborative effort to maintain peace along the border.

Gratitude for Restrained Approach

Phumtham Commends Thai Forces

Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai expressed gratitude Sunday night to Thai soldiers and the military for their patience and commitment to peaceful resolutions amid the conflict. This acknowledgment underscores the disciplined response that helped avoid escalation, boosting confidence in Thailand’s diplomatic and military coordination in 2025.

Future Vigilance Urged

Nutt Warns of Ongoing Challenges

Despite the progress, Lt Gen Nutt Sriin cautioned on Monday via Facebook that Thailand must remain vigilant, suggesting future border issues might prove harder to resolve. His call for preparedness reflects a proactive stance, ensuring the nation is ready to address potential threats and maintain security along the Thailand-Cambodia border moving forward.
