Steven Gerrard’s potential homecoming to Rangers appears increasingly unlikely, with reports suggesting the Scottish giants are closing in on Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti as their next manager.

The Gers have been searching for a permanent successor to Philippe Clement, and it now seems they have zeroed in on Carlo Ancelotti’s son, Davide, who has been a key figure in his father’s coaching staff at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton, and Real Madrid.

According to Spanish outlet AS, the move is “almost certain”, with Rangers’ new owners pushing for a fresh direction. Davide is expected to bring Francesco Mauri—another trusted member of Carlo Ancelotti’s backroom team—with him to Ibrox.

Before taking charge in Glasgow, the 34-year-old will fulfill his duties as Brazil’s assistant coach for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay in early June.

Gerrard, who began his managerial career at Rangers, had been linked with a sensational return after his success in Scotland. The Liverpool icon guided the club to their first league title in a decade during the 2020-21 season before departing mid-campaign to take over at Aston Villa.

Despite his exit, the squad he built went on to reach the Europa League final later that year. Now, with Rangers favoring Ancelotti, Gerrard’s hopes of a second stint in Glasgow may be fading fast.
