BMA Launches Songkran Command Centre

Comprehensive Safety Monitoring Across Bangkok

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has established a dedicated command centre to oversee safety during the Songkran festival, which runs from April 12 to 17. This initiative focuses on ensuring public safety at 17 celebration hotspots across the city, with operations supported by various agencies, including the Metropolitan Police Bureau, Tourist Police Bureau, and local authorities.

Advanced Surveillance and Tourist Assistance

The command centre utilizes CCTV systems, walk-through metal detectors, and patrol officers stationed at tourist service booths. These measures aim to assist visitors and address complaints effectively. The BMA encourages festival-goers to celebrate responsibly while preserving Thai cultural values.

High-Risk Areas Targeted by Safety Plans

Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Strategies

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has implemented a safety plan for April 11–17, focusing on high-risk areas such as night entertainment venues and event spaces. Surveillance teams have been deployed to 43 locations to enhance public safety during the festivities.

Traffic Safety Campaigns in Key Areas

In preparation for the “Ten Dangerous Days” road safety campaign, the Traffic and Transport Department has installed CCTV cameras in high-traffic areas like Khao San Road and Silom Road. Advanced AI technologies are being used for facial recognition and crowd analysis to improve monitoring efforts.

Songkran Celebrations Across Bangkok

Cultural and Entertainment Zones at 196 Locations

Deputy Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon announced that Songkran festivities will be held at 196 locations across Bangkok, categorized into cultural zones and fun-filled splash zones. Highlights include events at Sanam Luang, Iconsiam, Siam Center, and Samyan Mitrtown.

Five-No Policy for Responsible Celebrations

To ensure safety and environmental responsibility, the BMA has introduced a “Five-No” policy: no oversized water guns, no alcohol, no revealing clothing, no talcum powder, and no water wastage.

Transport Preparations for Holiday Travel

Increased Bus Services for Travelers

Transport Co acting president Chatchawan Phonamontham revealed that over 130,000 people are expected to leave Bangkok during Songkran using approximately 5,000 buses. An additional 1,000 buses have been deployed to accommodate the surge in passengers.

Heavy Traffic Observed on Major Roads

Friday saw significant congestion on Asia Road heading north and Phahonyothin Road toward the northeast as holiday travelers departed Bangkok for their hometowns.

Proactive Measures for Water Safety

Preventing Drowning Incidents During Festivities

Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin emphasized drowning prevention during Songkran due to historical spikes in fatalities during this period. Efforts include demarcating safe swimming zones at tourist hubs like reservoirs and beaches while deploying lifeguards for vigilance.

Marine Department’s Nationwide Mobilization

Nearly 800 officers and 52 patrol boats have been stationed nationwide to regulate water activities from April 12–15. The public is advised to avoid alcohol near water bodies and monitor weather conditions closely during boat rides.

Songkran as a Platform for Economic Growth

Boosting Tourism and Spending

Deputy government spokesman Anukul Prueksanusak highlighted projections of increased spending during Songkran, estimated at 134 billion THB—a 4.5% rise from last year’s figures. The festival serves as a soft power opportunity to enhance Thailand’s economic potential through cultural celebrations.

This year’s Songkran promises vibrant festivities paired with robust safety measures to ensure a joyful yet secure experience for all participants across Bangkok.
