Thailand’s Road Safety Initiative for Songkran 2025

National Safety Centre to Oversee Traffic During Songkran

Thailand has launched a national road safety centre to monitor and manage road accidents during the 2025 Songkran holiday, operating from April 11 to 18. This initiative aims to reduce fatalities and improve traffic management during one of the busiest travel periods in the country.

Government’s Commitment to Reducing Road Accidents

Deputy Prime Minister Leads Road Safety Efforts

Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul inaugurated the safety centre at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. He emphasized the government’s dedication to reducing road deaths and injuries during the extended holiday period, which now includes April 16 as an additional public holiday.

Comprehensive Strategies for Accident Prevention

Key Policies to Enhance Road Safety

Education Minister Permpoon Chidchob outlined five core strategies to prevent accidents:

  • Establishing a central command centre for accident prevention.

  • Addressing risk factors such as speeding and drunk driving.

  • Improving vehicle safety, including electric vehicles (EVs).

  • Encouraging safe driving habits.

  • Ensuring timely assistance for accident victims.

Nationwide Checkpoints and Volunteer Support

Vocational Students and Public Health Volunteers Mobilized

Over 150 service points will operate nationwide, staffed by vocational students providing vehicle repair services, including EVs. Public health volunteers will also assist with first aid and emergency response on both main and secondary roads.

Enhanced Traffic Management Measures

Monitoring and Law Enforcement Across Provinces

The safety centre will work closely with provincial agencies to enforce traffic laws, manage checkpoints, and promote public awareness campaigns. Officials have been instructed to exercise vigilance at checkpoints, particularly to address issues such as drunk driving.

Toll-Free Motorway Trial During Songkran

New Route to Ease Traffic Congestion

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit announced a trial opening of Motorway No. 6, connecting Hin Kong and Nakhon Ratchasima. The toll-free route is expected to cut travel times by two to three hours and reduce congestion on major roads by up to 45%.

Public Awareness Campaigns for Safer Travel

Corporate Partnerships Supporting Road Safety

Private sector initiatives, such as the “Refuel Your Spirit, Arrive Home Safely” campaign by Suntory PepsiCo Thailand, are also contributing to road safety efforts. Designated rest stops along major highways provide refreshments, car care services, and activities aimed at reducing driver fatigue.

Focus on Zero Fatalities During Songkran

Collaborative Efforts for Safer Celebrations

The government’s coordinated approach combines law enforcement, infrastructure improvements, volunteer mobilization, and public-private partnerships. These measures aim for safer travels during Songkran, allowing families to celebrate the festive season without tragedy.
