Ian Wright Urges Tuchel to Drop Rashford in Favor of Aston Villa Star

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has called on England manager Thomas Tuchel to drop Marcus Rashford after what he described as “fortunate” starts against Albania and Latvia.

Rashford, who has been on loan at Aston Villa from Manchester United, was included in Tuchel’s first England squad and started both World Cup qualifiers on the left wing. While the forward showed glimpses of promise, Tuchel emphasized the need for “more dribbling and aggression” from him. However, Rashford once again appeared hesitant against Latvia, leading Wright to suggest that fresh talent should be given a chance.

Speaking on Wrighty’s House, Wright expressed his admiration for Morgan Rogers’ full debut in England’s second match, contrasting his energy and intent with Rashford’s lackluster displays.

“Rogers was taking players on, getting crosses in, and making things happen,” Wright said. “That’s exactly what we need. But with Marcus, it’s like you’re expecting him to drive forward, and he stops. He hesitates. He needs to play like he’s willing to fail—just go for it. If he gets tackled, so be it, but at least he’s trying.”

Wright further criticized Rashford’s decision-making when he does beat defenders, suggesting that his final execution often lets him down. He believes Rashford was “fortunate” to get two consecutive starts and sees Rogers as a more dynamic option who understands his role and responsibilities on the pitch.

“We need Rogers’ energy in this squad. He knows exactly where he is mentally and what he has to do. I think Tuchel will put even more pressure on the wide players to step up and deliver,” Wright added.

The ex-England international is looking forward to seeing Tuchel push for more excitement and attacking intent from his wingers. He believes Rashford needs to show more urgency if he wants to keep his place in the team.

“If Marcus kept driving forward, making it exciting, delivering crosses, then you’d understand keeping him in. But after two games of uncertainty, maybe it’s time to bring in someone else. It’s been 18 months, and we need more.”

With Tuchel keen on revitalizing England’s attack, all eyes will be on his next squad selection to see if Rashford retains his spot or if fresh faces like Rogers get their chance to shine.
