Bernardo Silva echoed his manager’s sentiments, saying that Southampton’s performances throughout the season have deserved more points. “They press high, they try to build up with the ball. It makes it tough for us, but we’re happy to get the three points,” Silva added.
Despite Southampton’s effort, Haaland’s early goal stood as the match-winner. The Norwegian forward, described by Guardiola as “a guarantee” for goals, has now netted 11 times in nine Premier League games this season. Haaland’s physical presence in the box and his knack for finishing gave City the upper hand, though he missed a couple of chances to double his tally.
Guardiola also expressed frustration with how defenders often hold Haaland during crosses, calling for more penalties to be given in such situations. “Every cross is a penalty with Haaland; the way they pull and grab him should be punished,” said the City boss.
