PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra Calls for Accelerated Budget Disbursement

Investment Budget Spending Falls Behind Expectations

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has urged state agencies to expedite the disbursement of Thailand’s investment budget, as only 18% of the allocated funds have been spent since the fiscal year began on October 1. During a meeting with senior officials, including permanent secretaries, she expressed concern over the slow pace of budget utilization, emphasizing its importance in stimulating economic recovery.

Economic Stimulus Through Timely Spending

The Prime Minister highlighted that faster disbursement would complement ongoing economic measures, such as the second phase of the 10,000-baht cash handout provided to 3 million senior citizens this week. The fiscal 2025 budget, totaling 3.75 trillion baht, includes a significant investment allocation of 900 billion baht, accounting for 24.2% of total expenditure.

Ministries Directed to Prioritize Projects Amid Limited Funds

Focus on Fiscal Year 2026 Projects

Ms. Paetongtarn instructed all ministries to prioritize projects planned for the fiscal year 2026 due to limited financial resources. She stressed the need for properly prepared and cost-effective funding requests to ensure efficient allocation of resources.

Strategic Issues Highlighted for 2025

The Prime Minister also outlined three critical issues for this year: enhancing regional cooperation to combat dust pollution, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Thai-Chinese diplomatic relations, and intensifying efforts against drug trafficking and cybercrime.

Legal Amendments to Strengthen Cybercrime Enforcement

Proposed Crackdown on Technology Crimes

Ms. Paetongtarn announced plans to amend an executive decree aimed at combating technology-related crimes. This amendment would enhance enforcement capabilities and hold financial institutions, telecom companies, and social media platforms accountable for negligence in preventing call center scams.

Cabinet Approval for Legal Reforms

On Tuesday, the cabinet approved a legal amendment imposing penalties on organizations found reckless in addressing technology crimes. This move aims to protect citizens from financial fraud and cyber threats while ensuring corporate accountability.
