Google to Establish a Data Centre in Chonburi

Significant Investment in Thailand’s Digital Infrastructure

ခThis initiative is part of Google’s broader strategy to enhance its cloud infrastructure and support the growing demand for digital services across Southeast Asia.

Construction Timeline and Economic Impact

The data centre, currently under construction, is expected to be operational within the next two years. Google’s investment is projected to contribute an estimated 140 billion baht ($4.2 billion) to Thailand’s GDP by 2029, generating an average of 14,000 jobs annually from 2025 through 2029. This move aligns with Thailand’s ambition to become a leading digital hub in the region.

Collaboration with Thai Government and Educational Initiatives

Government Support for Technology Investments

During a recent meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra emphasized the Thai government’s commitment to supporting technology-related investments. He invited Google to use Thailand as a base for producing digital products, highlighting ongoing collaboration with the Education Ministry to enhance digital skills training for students and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs).

Fostering Digital Skills and Innovation

Ruth Porat, Google’s president and chief investment officer, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to empowering Thai businesses and communities through access to cloud and AI technologies. The data centre will not only support essential services like Google Search and Maps but also facilitate local businesses’ growth by providing low-latency AI capabilities.

Future Prospects for Thailand’s Digital Economy

Enhancing Cloud Services and AI Capabilities

The establishment of the data centre in Chonburi will complement Google’s Cloud Region in Bangkok, allowing local enterprises to leverage advanced computing resources. This strategic investment is expected to accelerate the development of innovative digital services and unlock new economic opportunities for Thai citizens.

Competitive Landscape in Southeast Asia

As Google expands its presence in Thailand, it faces increasing competition from other tech giants like Microsoft, which have also announced significant investments in cloud infrastructure across Southeast Asia. Nonetheless, Google’s commitment to building a robust digital ecosystem positions it favorably within this competitive landscape. By establishing a data hub in Chonburi, Google is not only reinforcing its presence in Southeast Asia but also contributing significantly to Thailand’s economic growth and digital transformation efforts.
