Rio Ferdinand has publicly defended the decision to appoint Thomas Tuchel as the new England manager, addressing criticisms from fans who feel the Football Association (FA) should have chosen an English coach. Tuchel, who has an impressive track record including a Champions League win with Chelsea, signed an 18-month deal worth £5 million annually, officially becoming Gareth Southgate’s successor. The FA had reportedly considered Pep Guardiola as well but faced backlash for overlooking English candidates like Graham Potter and Eddie Howe.

Ferdinand insists the priority should be on selecting the most qualified coach, regardless of nationality, and praises Tuchel as the best option available. He reminded fans that foreign managers like Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello have led the England squad in the past. In Ferdinand’s view, the most important factor is winning, predicting that Tuchel will bring home a trophy with England.

Citing Tuchel’s success in managing elite teams like Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea, Ferdinand believes the German is fully equipped to handle the pressure of leading the national team. He argues that Tuchel’s experience in navigating tournament football will be crucial for a squad that has come close to winning major titles in recent years.

While some supporters have expressed disappointment over the absence of an English manager, Ferdinand urges fans to focus on results rather than nationality. He concludes by boldly predicting that Tuchel will secure a major tournament victory during his tenure with England.
