34 METRE LUXURY YACHT DESTROYED BY FIRE IN CHALONG BAY

There was a major fire on a luxury yacht yesterday afternoon in Chalong Bay. The 34 metre vessel was gutted by the fire and the mast collapsed.

The boat was named by Navy personnel as ‘Obsession II’, a 34 metre sailing yacht constructed by Constructions Industrielles et Maritimes at their Rochefort sur Mer shipyard in France. Obsession II was launched in 2002 and refitted in 2008.

The yacht was moored off Koh Lon in Chalong Bay. The Royal Thai Navy, based in Cape Panwa, sent boats Tor 111 and Tor 272 to help put out the fire around 3.30pm. They were assisted by the Pearl Centre Rescue Foundation and a boat called Sorn Chon.

Although anchored, there was no one was on board at the time of the fire.

By the time fire fighters and the Navy reached Obsession II it had been totally gutted by the extensive fire and the mast had collapsed.

Obsession II was reportedly available for charter before the fire. Up to eight guests could be accommodated in four luxury suites, with accommodation for five crew.

The cause of the fire remains unknown
